Good to know
Everything about EMS training.
EMS training originally comes from physiotherapy and stands for electromyostimulation. Electrical impulses cause the muscle to contract — around 85 times per second. The result is a more efficient full-body workout within 20 minutes. Depending on the intensity, 20 minutes of EMS challenge the musculature as much as a 2-hour conventional fitness workout.
You slip into a suit fitted with electrodes that is connected to a computer-controlled device. The personal trainer individually regulates the electrical impulses: pulse frequency (ideally 80–85 hertz), contraction and pause duration as well as the pulse intensity. All major muscle groups are addressed via the vest, hip belt and cuffs. The session lasts 20 to 30 minutes, during which you perform isometric or dynamic exercises on instruction — steadily increased so that no stagnation occurs.
EMS training is suitable for any healthy person. Excluded are people with a pacemaker, epilepsy, tumour conditions and an increased risk of thrombosis, as well as pregnant women. With these contraindications, it is advisable to consult your doctor before starting training.
With proper guidance, training with low-frequency stimulation current is fundamentally not dangerous — the organ and heart muscles are not reached by the impulses. What matters is a responsible trainer who slowly increases the intensity over 8 to 10 weeks, as well as sufficient fluid intake. Since EMS is significantly more intense than conventional strength training, you should train only 1 to a maximum of 2 times per week.
